Football Training Tips To Succeed At The College Level: Running Back Position Tip #1:

by CSA Prepstar Canada

All good running backs, whether in high school or college, cannot only run, but catch, break tackles and basically run through opposing defenders. As a running back in the NCAA you'll need the ability to make defenders miss their tackles, catch passes in tight coverage and show extreme mental and physical toughness if you want to succeed.

PROPER RUNNING BACK STANCE

While in your stance always keep your head up with your eyes looking straight ahead. Immediately after the snap you'll have to find a proper hole to run through in the line.

For a two-point stance always keep your feet directly under your hips with your knees slightly bent. Have a slight bend at your waist to allow you to comfortably place your hands on your knees. Never lean too far forward as this may give an indication to the defense as to what play is coming. Keep your shoulders even with your knees and your back straight.

In a three-point stance you will have better lateral movement for all types of plays. Keep your feet shoulder width apart, parallel with the line with your knees bent far enough for your forearm to reach your thighs. Always keep your back straight and your shoulders level with the line. Have your fingers resting on the ground right under the shoulder of your extended time.

A4-point stance is usually used in short yardage situations. Your feet should be a little bit less than shoulder width apart with your heels slightly off the ground. You knees should be bent enough so that your forearms can reach your thighs. Your fingers should be placed on the ground a few inches in front of the shoulders on your extended arms with your shoulders parallel with the line.

WHEN THE BALL IS SNAPPED

During the lateral moves, when the ball is snapped, your hips and waist will lean in the direction the play is going. Your away foot, which is the foot farthest away from the plays direction, will cross over the play foot; which is the foot closest to the plays direction. When your away foot touches the ground, your play foot steps towards the play. Your hands and arms will swing in the plays direction and your shoulder will turn towards the play at the same time.

When moving forward take a small directional step with your play foot while taking a hard push with your away foot.
